2 CONC Extension Clu b, is past president of the Four Corners Garden Club,
2 CONC and has the rewardi ng hobby of floral culture.

2 CONC in t he wagon train. One such was that Gen's mother, Anna, was 10

2 CONC the entire wagon tra in at some point in the trip. Anna's grandfather
2 CONC was then put in char ge of the wagon that Anna was in. Often she would
2 CONC be required to wal k. If she complained about walking, Ann's
2 CONC grandfather would give her somet hing to carry. That illuminated much
2 CONC of the complaints.

2 CONC ha ve been born in 1855 or 1854 instead of 1865 as I have recorded. He
2 CONC fir st apprenticed in Council Bluff, Iowa, to a druggist. A year or
2 CONC two lat er he went by stage coach to Modesto, California, where he
2 CONC worked in a che ese factory. Then he was Singer Sewing Machine
2 CONC salesman throughout the we st and tried his hand at panning for gold
2 CONC in one of the lesser Gold Rushe s. In the 1930's there was a radio
2 CONC program (in California?) that had a cha racter named John Lyneburg in
2 CONC it who was a carpenter. Could this have be en "our John"? I don't know
2 CONC when John moved to Spokane, Washington b ut he worked as a nurseryman
2 CONC there. His family wrote to him about "Constan ce" Jorgenson. In a
2 CONC newspaper article announcing his marriage, John is des cribed as a
2 CONC "prominent stock raiser and extensive land owner" in Harriso n, Idaho.
2 CONC John worked in one of the seven wood mills at the time in Harris on.
2 CONC John also spent much time with the Spokane Indians, living among th em
2 CONC at times. When John moved his family to Washington, he had their name
2 CONC c hanged to Andersen. There is speculation that Andersen could have
2 CONC been h is grandmother's maiden name. He died in 1921 or 1922 with a
2 CONC terrible stom ach problem that could have been stomach cancer.

2 CONT Another source has John's birth as 1860.
2 CONT John changed his family's name from Lyneburg to Andersen when he mov
2 CONC ed to Washington in July 1918. Lyneburg is the Danish version of a
2 CONC Germ an name. It comes from the name given the town of Lyne in
2 CONC Denmark.
2 CONT Stan thought his dad was born in 1860 and that he was "age 62 in '22"

2 CONT Though she came from Denmark, my maternal grandmother had dark eyes
2 CONC and ha ir like her father.
2 CONT Her father, Christian Jorgensen was conceived when Spain was fighting
2 CONC Denm ark and was the offspring of an unknown Spanish soldier and a
2 CONC Danish gir l. His mother was quietly married to the village blacksmith
2 CONC before Christi an was born.
2 CONT Christian was a small dark man who became very prominent in his
2 CONC communit y, Odense. He was married twice (his first wife died); played
2 CONC second flu te in the Danish National Orchestra; had twenty children
2 CONC and lived to be 9 8.
2 CONT My grandmother, Christense Henrietta Jorgensen, was his youngest child
2 CONC a nd was born March 13, 1872, when her father was in his 70's.
2 CONT An older brother, Karl Jorgensen preceded Christense to the United
2 CONC State s. He graduated from MIT in Boston, Massachusetts, and then
2 CONC settled in Chi cago, ILL. He remained a bachelor and worked as a
2 CONC stationary Engineer.
2 CONT An elder sister, __________________________________ married a German
2 CONC who l ived in that country. She was the mother of Henry Kristofersen
2 CONC whom my gra ndmother had taught his first piano lessons. He became a
2 CONC well known ope ra star in the Berlin State Opera and sang for many
2 CONC kings and queens in Eu rope.
2 CONT My grandmother had the full educational benefit that was allowed a wom
2 CONC an in those days, She learned to speak and write good English and
2 CONC French a nd became a concert pianist and organist. Because she was
2 CONC female, at a ge 18 she was sent to Sweden to learn to cook.
2 CONT When grandmother was in her 20s, she joined her brother in Chicago in
2 CONC 189 8. While there, she played and taught the pipe organ and piano and
2 CONC work ed in a church. She also worked as a governess for the Fisher
2 CONC Flour fami ly in Seattle, Washington.
2 CONT Around the year 1900 her family wrote to her about a son of friends
2 CONC who w as living in the Washington Territory.
2 CONT My maternal grandfather, John Lyneburg, was born in Juteland, Denmark
2 CONC Apr il 2, 1855. He came to America in 1869.
2 CONT First John apprenticed in Council Bluff, Iowa, to a druggist. A year
2 CONC or t wo later he went by stage coach to Modesto, California, where he
2 CONC work ed in a cheese factory. Then he obtained a position as a Singer
2 CONC Sewing Mac hine salesman throughout the west, especially in the Oregon
2 CONC Territor y. He also worked as a nurseryman in Spokane, Washington.
2 CONT His family wrote to him about Constance Jorgensen. An account of their
2 CONC mar riage found in Spokane's Spokesman Review April 17, 1901 reads:
2 CONT "John Lyneburg of Harrison, Idaho was married to Miss Constance
2 CONC Jorgens en of Chicago at the First Methodist parsonage @@ 5 o'clock
2 CONC yesterday after noon, Rev P.A. Cool officiating. Miss Jorgensen

2 CONT An Aside: While I, Mary Meier Irene Daly Bolling Crimmins was
2 CONC searching th roughout the Spokesman Review in Spokane, Washington, it
2 CONC almost seemed I w ent back in time. Every day there were the latest
2 CONC accounts of Carrie Nati on who was campaigning against alcohol and
2 CONC especially against men spendi ng all of their money in bars, etc. and
2 CONC not supporting their families adeq uately. She was often being
2 CONC arrested and put in jail for her efforts.

2 CONT There were almost daily reports of ships being lost at sea and news
2 CONC abo ut hundreds of home seekers coming West by train.

2 CONT About two miles from that small community where Cour D'Alene River
2 CONC joins t he blue blue Cour D'Alene Lake, my grandfather had already
2 CONC homesteaded 1 60 acres. The young family lived in town while trees
2 CONC were being cut, la nd was being cleared, and a house was being built
2 CONC high on a hill.
2 CONT Their first daughter, Louisa, was born 2/11/1902, then came Carl
2 CONC Lynebu rg 10/17/1903; and John Lyneburg 4/30/1905. In 1906, my mother,
2 CONC Lynne w as the first child born in the house on the homestead. Then
2 CONC came Hen ry L. 7/1/1908, Stanley L. 12/27/1910 and Joseph L. 5/5/1915.
2 CONT How can mothers relate to their daughters when their own identity has
2 CONC be en suppressed?
2 CONT Our ancestors brought to this country hopes of a new beginning, hopes
2 CONC of f reedom. They also brought with them centuries of inherited
2 CONC beliefs.
2 CONT One of the old ideas was that female children were of little value,
2 CONC and th at a woman's place is in the home. My mother had some
2 CONC oppressive memori es of her early childhood:
2 CONT Grandmother became swamped with babies and housework. All of her
2 CONC educati on seemed like a fruitless waste. She had little time for her
2 CONC own dreams.
2 CONT One day when my mother was very young she came upon her mother
2 CONC standing be fore a bonfire, throwing books into roaring flames. In
2 CONC went volumes abo ut Greek Mythology. In went Thoreau and Shakespeare.
2 CONC Grandmother was weepi ng. When she saw her daughter looking in
2 CONC bewilderment she cried, "These th ings are nothing but foolishness.
2 CONC Never forget! It is cursed to be a woman !"
2 CONT My mother had already experienced some of the injustice suffered by
2 CONC female s. She has related many times her feelings of being the
2 CONC outcast. She cou ld never understand why she was treated so
2 CONC differently by the family simp ly because she happened to be born a
2 CONC girl. A girl, it can be said, endow ed with superior intelligence.
2 CONT Her father also felt the bonds of matrimony stifling. No longer could
2 CONC he r oam and explore the world at will. He often expressed his feeling
2 CONC of bei ng tied down.
2 CONT In the early 1900's a severe blizzard blanketed the homestead and the
2 CONC surr ounding area. The family's livestock wandered off. Grandfather
2 CONC was gone f or several days. He suffered severe frostbite. It is said
2 CONC that an Indian w oman took him in and cared for him until he could
2 CONC return home.
2 CONT Then he lost all of his toes. After that it was said his feet looked
2 CONC li ke cheese boxes or boxcars.
2 CONT But my mother mostly gathered good memories of her young childhood:
2 CONC Her mo ther playing the Sterk Piano bought in Spokane. Other memories

2 CONC ed in the county of Schuyler, have been more intimately identified and
2 CONC act ively connected with its history, than, HON. SIMEON L. ROOD, to
2 CONC whom thi s, and a succeeding number of our sketches, will be devoted.
2 CONC All things co nsidered, "Judge Rood" as he has been called for the
2 CONC past 54 years, mu st be classed among the most remarkable men, who
2 CONC aided in shaping the coun ty seat destinies of the new county, in
2 CONC which "from Alpha to Omega" -- fr om beginning to end -- he bore a
2 CONC most important and conspicuous part.
2 CONT   He was born in the town of Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont, on
2 CONC t he 19th day of March, 1804, and is therefore now in the 87th year of
2 CONC his a ge, and a resident of the village of Watkins, where he has lived
2 CONC during t he past 35 years. Both of his parents were from the state of
2 CONC Connecticu t, whence they moved into Vermont; and desiring to make a
2 CONC useful man of th eir son, he was, in 1815, when but 11 years of age,
2 CONC apprenticed into the b ookbinding avocation, in the city of Troy, New
2 CONC York it having been incorpo rated as such in 1816, when he was 12
2 CONC years old.
2 CONT   In the year 1817, for good and sufficient reasons, he left the
2 CONC bookbindi ng business without a "ticket of leave" or asking permission
2 CONC so to do, a nd at the age of 13 years made his way, on foot with his
2 CONC pack on his bac k, to the town of Cato in the northern part of Cayuga
2 CONC County, where duri ng the five following years, he worked by the month
2 CONC at farming, and on t he Erie Canal, then in process of construction,
2 CONC in the summers, and at cho pping fallow lands in winter.
2 CONT   Not having attended school a single day since leaving the parental
2 CONC roo f, seven years before, and being 18 years of age, in 1822 he
2 CONC procured Pike 's arithmetic, Kirman's Grammer, Cobb's spelling book,
2 CONC and English reade r, paper, pencils, and inkstand, and at an expense
2 CONC of $4.50 equipped himse lf for going to school, paying his way by
2 CONC chopping maple wood at 32 cen ts a cord, walking two miles, morning
2 CONC and night, in going to and from h is work. He thus attended a country
2 CONC district school during that winter, a nd the following one, doing
2 CONC chores night and morning and worked one d ay in the week for his
2 CONC board. This appears to have been about the exte nt of his early
2 CONC education, and still he became a good practical profession al man in
2 CONC after life.
2 CONT   On the 24th day of March, 1825, he married Miss Cynthia Ladow (who
2 CONC sti ll survives) and settled on a small farm, which he rented in the
2 CONC town of C onquest, in the county of Cayuga, and during the six years
2 CONC that he thus re sided, he was honored with various town offices, and
2 CONC among them that of Sc hool Commissioner -- having, however, in the
2 CONC years 1823 and '24 been engag ed in aiding to build saw mills in
2 CONC Watkins Glen.

1 NOTE  Felix VanDerschelden, a cabinet maker and casket builder, came to the
2 CONC Unit ed States in October, 1883. His wife Marie and their two sons,
2 CONC Joseph (a ge 4 1/2) and Gustave (nearly 3) traveled second class with
2 CONC him on the mer chant ship S.S. Nederland from Ronse, Belgium.Fourteen
2 CONC days later their sh ip landed at Castle Garden, the immigrant
2 CONC receiving station in New Yor k.  The family then continued by train to
2 CONC St. Mary's, Kansas. Two more chi ldren were born there.
